English

Language Arts courses at Ohio Hi-Point Career Center offer instruction following the Ohio Academic Content Standards. At various times, students may be asked to work in cooperative learning groups, give presentations and use student laptops to complete various assignments and projects. A complete list of courses includes:

Basic English 11

This is a modified English class where students will read novels and short stories, begin the Career Passport portfolio, and focus on improving their reading and writing skills necessary to succeed in their chosen field. Also, an emphasis will be placed on the use of technology and proper research skills as it pertains to real life experiences.  (1/2 credit per semester)

Basic English 12

This is a modified English class where students will continue to focus on improving their reading and writing skills, complete the Career Passport portfolio, and their Senior Project. More emphasis will be placed on technology and using proper research skills as it pertains to real life experiences.  (1/2 credit per semester)

English 11

This course is a study of American literature, based on a textbook but including supplemental material. Students will be expected to read novels, complete a research paper, begin the Career Passport portfolio, and focus on honing reading and writing skills necessary to succeed in their chosen field. Also, an emphasis will be placed on technology and proper research skills. (1/2 credit per semester)

English 12

This course is a study of British literature, based on a textbook but including supplemental material. Students will be expected to read novels, complete a senior research paper, the Career Passport portfolio, multimedia projects and presentations.   Also, an emphasis will be placed on technology and proper research skills. (1/2 credit per semester)

College Prep English 11

This course is a study of American literature. Content will come from the text as well as secondary sources. Major projects include novels, a research paper, the Career Passport portfolio, and a multi-genre project. Higher level thinking skills are emphasized, as well as preparation for a college curriculum, paying special attention to technology and proper research skills. (1/2 credit per semester)

College Prep English 12

This course is a study of British Literature.  Content will come from the text as well as secondary sources.  Major projects include novels, a senior research paper, the Career Passport Portfolio, multimedia projects and presentations.  Higher level thinking skills are emphasized, as well as preparation for a college curriculum, and proper research skills. (1/2 credit per semester)

Honors English 12 (By teacher recommendation only)

This course requires expository, analytical, and argumentative writing assignments that are based on readings representing a wide variety of prose styles and genres.  Students will be expected to complete an extensive Career Passport Portfolio, a Senior Research Paper, essays, multimedia projects as well as blog essay responses and presentations.  This is an advanced class modeled after AP courses at partner schools where students are only placed by grades and teacher recommendations. (1/2 credit per semester)

Communications

This course deals with workplace relationships, oral and visual communication skills, as well as utilization of technology. Students will be expected to give multi-media presentations, speeches and to participate in group projects in which peer cooperation will be emphasized.  (1/2 credit per semester)

Basic/Technical Reading I (By teacher recommendation only)

Basic literacy focused on technical reading, writing, spelling, and grammar related to occupational success. The use of technology will also be an important aspect of the class. (1/2 credit per semester)

Basic/Technical Reading II (By teacher recommendation only)

Basic literacy focused on technical reading, spelling, grammar, and writing related to occupational success.  Seniors will also work on their Senior Project using a modified format. The use of technology will also be an important aspect of the class. (1/2 credit per semester)
